There is a pool of IIT and NIT postgraduates your competitors are not hiring from

Should companies hire MTech graduates from IITs and NITs for software engineering roles in India?

5 min read. NxtWave Edge research, 2025–26 hiring cycle

Every fresher hiring conversation in India eventually comes back to the same institutions: IITs, NITs, IIITs, and strong regional colleges. The debate is always about which tier to target and at what CTC.

What almost never comes up is the MTech candidate sitting in the same department, on the same campus, two floors above the BTech batch everyone is competing for.

Same institution. Same academic rigour. Two additional years of specialisation in exactly the domains that are hardest to hire for: data engineering, AI, embedded systems, cybersecurity. And a hiring pool that most companies have never thought to include in their campus planning.

The Observation

Fresher hiring programs in India are built almost entirely around BTech graduates. The intake timelines, the assessment frameworks, the campus engagement models, all of it is designed for a four-year engineering graduate entering the workforce for the first time.

The oversight is not deliberate. It is structural. Campus hiring programs are built around BTech timelines, BTech placement cells, and BTech assessment calendars. MTech candidates exist outside that design by default, which means they are available, assessable, and largely untouched by the competition that makes BTech hiring increasingly difficult every cycle.

They are not actively excluded. They are simply not included in the design. The result is a talent pool with stronger technical depth than the BTech cohort from identical institutions, available through the same campus relationships, that most companies are systematically overlooking.

What the Data Shows

NxtWave Edge’s assessment data from the November 2025 cycle identified 1,319 MTech candidates across IITs, NITs, and IIITs who had been assessed on the platform, distributed across 48 institutions.

These numbers reflect a single assessment cycle. They are indicative of pool size, not current availability, since placement activity moves continuously and many of these candidates will have been placed since the assessment date.

What the data establishes is that the MTech pool from premier institutions is not a niche segment. It is a structured, assessable, reachable group of candidates that exists within the same institutional relationships most companies already have.

The profile is distinct from a BTech graduate in ways that matter for specific roles. An MTech candidate from IIT Hyderabad or IIIT Delhi has typically completed a research thesis, handled a deeper curriculum in their specialisation, and in many cases has prior industry exposure through internships or project work. For roles in data engineering, AI, systems programming, or cybersecurity, this profile is often a stronger fit than a comparable BTech graduate, at a CTC band that is competitive but not significantly higher.

Why It Happens

MTech graduates fall outside the standard campus hiring calendar. BTech placement seasons at most institutions run from August to February of the final year. MTech programs have different timelines, different TPO structures in some cases, and different placement processes that do not always align with the hiring cycles companies have already built.

The operational effort to engage an MTech pool separately is real. It requires a different outreach approach, a different assessment timing, and often a different conversation with the institution’s placement office. Most hiring teams, already stretched across a standard BTech cycle, do not have the bandwidth to run a parallel track.

There is also an awareness gap. Hiring managers at most companies have a clear mental model of what a BTech fresher looks like and what roles they fit. The MTech profile is less familiar, which makes it harder to champion internally even when the fit is obvious on paper.

A deeply specialised pool from institutions companies already engage goes largely untapped, not by decision, but because the process was never designed to include it.

What Changes When You Fix It

The MTech pool is most valuable for companies hiring in specialised technical domains where depth matters more than breadth. Data engineering, machine learning infrastructure, embedded systems, cybersecurity, and AI engineering are all roles where an MTech candidate from a strong institution is likely to be a stronger hire than a BTech candidate from the same institution, and where the additional specialisation translates directly into faster time-to-productivity after joining.

NxtWave Edge reached out to TPOs across 48 institutions to confirm real-time availability within a four-working-day window after requirement confirmation. The model demonstrated that MTech talent from premier institutions can be accessed through the same infrastructure used for BTech hiring, without building a separate campus engagement function from scratch.

For companies running specialist technical roles at competitive CTCs, the MTech pool offers a higher conversion probability than the BTech pool from the same institutions, because the candidates’ expectations and the role requirements are more closely aligned.

The One Thing to Do Differently

In your next hiring planning cycle, identify one or two roles where technical depth matters more than breadth. Roles where an additional year or two of specialised study would make a measurable difference to the quality of the hire.

Then ask whether your current campus engagement model is designed to reach MTech candidates from the institutions you are already working with. If the honest answer is no, the pool exists. The infrastructure to reach it exists. The only thing missing is the decision to include it in scope.

The companies that move on this first will not be competing with everyone else for the same BTech pool.
